When someone searches “contractor near me,” the businesses at the top get the calls. Local SEO is how you earn one of those spots — without paying for every click.
Nearly half of all Google searches have local intent, and for home services the number is even higher. When a homeowner types “roofer near me” or “kitchen remodel [your city],” Google shows a map with three businesses — the “map pack” — above the regular results. Those three listings capture the overwhelming majority of clicks and calls.
The contractors winning those spots aren’t necessarily the biggest or oldest. They’re the ones who’ve done the local SEO groundwork below. The best part: unlike ads, these results keep working long after you set them up.
Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest factor in whether you show up in the map pack. Claim it, then fill out everything: exact business name, primary and secondary categories, service areas, hours, phone, and a keyword-rich description. Add real photos of your work regularly — profiles with fresh photos get noticeably more views and calls.
Review count and rating are among the strongest local ranking signals, and they’re what homeowners actually read before calling. Ask every happy customer for a review the day the job wraps, send a direct link to make it one tap, and respond to every review — good or bad. A steady drip of recent five-star reviews beats a pile of old ones.
One “Services” page can’t rank for everything. Create a dedicated page for each core service and, where it makes sense, for each city you serve — “Bathroom Remodeling in [City].” Each page should have genuinely useful, unique content, not the same text with the city name swapped. This is how you rank for dozens of specific searches instead of competing for one generic term.
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-checks your info across directories — Yelp, Angi, BBB, Facebook, Houzz — and inconsistencies (an old phone number, a former address) erode trust and rankings. Pick one exact format and make it identical everywhere it appears online.
Links from local sources — your supplier, the chamber of commerce, a local sponsorship, a regional news mention — tell Google you’re a real, established business in the area. A handful of relevant local links often moves the needle more than dozens of random ones.
Local SEO is a compounding asset: the work you do this quarter keeps generating calls next year at no extra cost per lead. It pairs perfectly with paid ads — ads for instant volume, SEO for durable, lower-cost lead flow. That combination is exactly what we set up for contractors at NARU Systems with our SEO and advertising services.
